An ESB, or Extra Special Bitter is a traditional English style of beer. Way back when in the UK, beers were characterized as either “milds” or “bitters.” Both have a noticeable malt character, and are the perfect pub beer for enjoying a good book or deep conversation.

Here’s the story behind the Beer…

In 1911, the tip of a spear made of Yew Wood was found in Clacton-on-Sea in England. Carbon dating revealed it to be roughly 420,000 years old – the oldest known wooden implement ever found. Archaeologists believe this 37 centimeter instrument was made by use of a flint scraper and used for hunting. However, it’s ancient date brought skepticism of its use – until similar spears were found in Germany with dates approximating 300,000 years old.

Your discovery…

Even though the word "bitter" is in the name, this style has a balance of maltiness and hop character with neither overpowering the other. With our Clacton ESB you will notice a biscuity and somewhat sweet malt character that is well balanced with Earthy hop notes. We also used a traditional English strain of yeast that accentuates these flavors and aromas (rich and slightly toasty malt character)
